Local MP Visits Nova Hreod School To See Its Success

Local MP Justin Tomlinson has revisited Nova Hreod Academy to meet with principle Darren Barton as well as members of the School Council.

Nova Hreod Academy is part of United Learning – a group of academies and independent schools which aims to provide excellent education to children and young people across the Country.  United Learning’s ethos is to bring out the best in everyone – students, staff, parents and the wider community. Students are taught a number of core values including:

  • Ambition – to achieve the best for ourselves and others;
  • Confidence – to have the courage of our convictions and to take risks in the right cause;
  • Creativity – to imagine possibilities and make them real;
  • Respect – of ourselves and others in all that we do;
  • Enthusiasm – to seek opportunity. Find what is good and pursue talents and interests;
  • Determination – to overcome obstacles and reach success.

Through United Learning, Nova Hreod Academy is able to share the best practise with schools across the country and the staff benefit from the Group’s wide range of high-quality professional development opportunities.

The school has seen a transformation in recent years since Mr Barton has taken over with improvements in GCSE grades across the board. In 2014, 38% of pupils were achieving A* to C grades in their GCSE. In 2015, that figured jumped to 68% of pupils.

A key part of this transformation has come from the new ethos and rules expected from students. Pupils are taught to work to the best of their ability whilst sticking to the rules and ensuring the behaviour is respectful at all times. Furthermore a smart dress code is now expected at all times, as the school is working to deliver high standards in every area.

On his visit, Justin was given a tour of a number of classrooms by Principle Darren Barton and Governor Pat Porter. He was also given an opportunity to sit down and discuss politics with year 7 members of the Student Council.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “It is fantastic to see the absolute transformation of this school thanks to the brilliant leadership of Darren Barton. Both students and staff are rightly pleased with the schools recent success and it is to their credit that both the results and reputation of the school is consistently on the up. I was quizzed by members of the student council and they proved to be fantastic ambassadors to the school as they were engaging, intelligent and inquisitive. As a result I have tasked them with creating a display for my new office and they were delighted to take up the challenge!”
