Local MP Justin Tomlinson enjoyed a visit to the St Barnabas Church Open Day last Saturday in Gorse Hill. The Church was hosting an open day to showcase the fantastic work it does within the local community and with various groups & charities including the Open Door Centre and the Scouts & Guides.
The church was first opened in 1885 and sits on the corner of Ferndale Road & Cricklade Road. It hosts many weekly events for the local community including a craft club, coffee morning and regular jumble sales & quiz nights. Swindon Open Door Centre, a charity which Justin has supported for a number of years and helped raise money for are also based in the church hall.
During the open day, Justin and his wife Kate took part in a British Sign Language lesson which was hosted by the volunteers who contribute to the BSL service for the deaf community in Swindon.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: “Not only is St Barnabas a beautiful church where many local residents worship, but it is also an integral part to the local community. Kate and I really enjoyed the Open Day, especially chatting to the many volunteers who run local groups & clubs. The BSL lesson was particularly enjoyable and I now know what all of the seasons & weather conditions are – no doubt all will come in use during the British summer!”
