Swindon MPs Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland have met with staff at Nationwide including the new chief executive Joe Garner who has joined the Swindon-based Building Society from BT Openreach.
The MPs met with staff who are helping with Nationwide’s new specialist support service which is aimed at providing extra support for vulnerable customers. The journey began with a project partnership with Macmillan to deliver a support service for customers affected by cancer. They have also been working closely with other national charities to help those suffering from other life limiting conditions including MS, Parkinsons and people who have suffered from a stroke.
The next stage is spreading this support service to other customers including those with reduced mental capacity, mental health conditions and learning disabilities. The final stage will be to explore options to provide help for those with reduced financial capability as well as young people and the elderly.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: “It was great to visit Nationwide again, this time at the Windmill Hill Business Park. We got an opportunity to hear directly some of the cases that the support team are dealing with when it comes to vulnerable customers and we will continue to help them look for other ways to expand this support service. This is something I was involved in from the beginning as Macmillan had asked for my help to support the initiative. I think it’s fantastic that Nationwide are now looking to expand this. On another note, It’s always great to hear that Nationwide continue to invest in Swindon and see this as their long-term home.”
