Swindon MPs, Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland, were amongst the guest who attended Swindon's recently-opened UTC (University Technical College) for its first business partnership event.
The £10 million UTC, which is based in part of what was once Swindon's Great Western Railway, opened its doors to the first set of students in September. Already, there are almost 140 students who have taken the decision to attend.
A new concept in education, UTCs specialise in engineering and technical skills for students aged 14-19. Through both the curriculum and the design of the building; the aim is to provide a workplace environment for students rather than the feel of a classroom. The building certainly adds to the professional feel of the UTC as both the old school building and water tower on the Bristol Street site have been built into the new campus.
Both Justin and Robert were taken on a tour of the state of the art campus while epresentatives from the College’s main sponsor, Oxford Brookes University, were also in attendance to explain how rapid progress had meant it only took three years from the day when the idea of the UTC was first jotted down on paper to the official opening.
Justin spoke to businesses at the partnership event and encouraged more of them to get on board and support the College.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "Businesses need to support the College, give its students the opportunity and they will be paid back tenfold. This incredible space is a wonderful addition to our town, and is a fantastic way of giving youngsters fresh opportunities whilst honouring our town’s engineering heritage."
