Local MP Justin Tomlinson has attended a ceremony at the brand new £15.5 million TNT super depot site which is to create 250 new jobs in Swindon.
Express delivery group TNT have announced the creation of up to 250 jobs in Swindon in a new £15.5m 'super-depot' to be built in the shadow of the town's giant B&Q warehouse.
The global TNT group are combining a regional distribution hub for the South of England with a local parcels depot at the new 10 acre site on the South Marston Industrial Estate. The site is expected to be completed in the next 24 weeks, and TNT will be advertising jobs for drivers, loading bay operatives and many other roles in operational support.
Keeping local parcel traffic in the South West will also mean fewer vehicles and fewer miles on already congested roads and motorways. The company, which is also significantly investing in upgrading its entire fleet, estimates its long-haul lorries will reduce mileage by nearly 690,000miles (1.1million km), which, in turn, will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 815,000kg each year, thereby reducing the impact on the environment.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "This is yet another vote of confidence in the growing Swindon economy. This £10m investment will create 250 new jobs, building on the 7,000 new jobs created since 2010. We have seen unemployment fall by a staggering 58%, the fastest growth rate of new businesses in the South-West and continuous new investment in our town. Swindon is very much on the up. The Council should also be praised for making extra efforts to attract new industry and skilled jobs to Swindon. We have a diverse, skilled workforce, we have a great location on the M4 with excellent links to the M5 and we have sites ready for businesses to move onto. We have a new UTC (University Technical College) which is working with the business community to create skills and jobs for the future. We have £119m investment in projects from the LEP (Swindon & Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership) coming into the town. It's a very exciting time to be in Swindon. We are certainly a town that is very much on the up."
