North Swindon MP Cuts The Ribbon On New Uplands Charity Shop

Local MP and Minister for Disabled People Justin Tomlinson was on hand to open the third Uplands Education Trust charity shop in Swindon.

The Uplands Educational Trust has successfully opened its first retail business, Uplands Shop, in Redhouse with a second one on Commercial Road. Now the third shop has opened in Gorse Hill on Cricklade road with future plans to open more.  All of the shops are run and managed by young people with special educational needs as part of their work related learning curriculum.

The shops have been extremely successful and have provided young disabled people with opportunities and work experience in areas of retail, customer service and catering. In addition to providing real community inclusion and breaking down barriers, the experience gained prepares the young people for supported work after they pass the school leaving age.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I have been a long standing supporter of Uplands and am exceptionally proud to have such a fantastic charity and school in my constituency. The Redhouse shop has received a number of my clothes over the years so I am glad to have another location where I can continue to support the charity. Big congratulations to Jackie and the team who work tirelessly to support young people with disabilities.”
