Justin Tomlinson MP and Leader of Swindon Borough Council, Cllr. David Renard, joined local residents in Stratton St. Margaret for the unveiling of a new peace memorial marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.
More than 200 people joined volunteers from the Royal British Legion, the Swindon Sea Cadet Corps and Civic Leaders for the dedication of the memorial at the corner of Grange Drive and Ermin Street. The memorial was funded in part thanks to a donation from Barratt Homes and means that local residents will now have a permanent site to remember those who have fallen in conflict and thank those who work to promote peace.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "I am really pleased that Stratton St. Margaret Parish Council has found the resources to construct this excellent memorial so that in the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, we can pay tribute to those who have sadly lost their lives in wars around the world and give thanks to the many people who work tirelessly to ensure a lasting peace".
