The North Swindon MP & former Minister for Disabled People, Justin Tomlinson, has met with Macmillan Cancer Support to discuss their work in Swindon and across the country.
Cancer is devastating illness which strikes indiscriminately. Official statistics show that around 5,700 people in Swindon are living with and beyond cancer and it is estimated to rise to around 11,000 by 2030. In Swindon, cancer support & survival rates are above the national average and the forthcoming radiotherapy centre at the Great Western Hospital (which Justin lobbied for) will improve this further.
During his time both as an MP and as a Minister, Justin has worked closely with Macmillan on issues effecting cancer sufferers in Swindon and across the country. As part of the meeting, Justin highlighted proposals to reduce to costs associated with living with cancer and measures to improve access to insurance and banking products. Locally, Nationwide has created the first specialist support team within a bank to assist customers with cancer, disabilities and other long term health conditions.
Justin also holds the record for the most number of Macmillan Coffee Mornings supported - visiting eight in one morning to raise funds for the organisation.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "It is always good to sit down with the team from Macmillan and discuss the work they are doing to support people living with and beyond cancer. Since I was first elected, I have actively worked with Macmillan to improve the system for cancer sufferers and their families. From coffee mornings to legislation, I'm always happy to work with Macmillan to help make positive changes to benefit residents locally and nationally".
