Justin Tomlinson MP has visited the ever-popular Draycott’s Sports Camp at Oakhurst Primary School, where their summer camp is in full swing, providing childcare whilst promoting healthy & active lifestyles.
The mood was buoyant as the children had been taking part in activities inspired by the Tokyo Olympics, including the Gymnastics bar.
This year Draycott’s is also taking part in the Government’s Holiday Activities & Food Programme, which aims to provide healthy food and enriching activities to disadvantaged children throughout the school holidays.
The Government has made £220 million available to local authorities to coordinate free holiday provision, including healthy food and enriching activities. Through funding given to Swindon Borough Council, several places at Draycott’s Sports Camp are provided for free to children eligible for Free School Meals. This means that they don’t miss out on summer activities and food is also provided to ensure healthy meals.
Justin commented, “I visit Draycott’s every Summer and they are always taking in part in so many different sports – from football & cricket to dance & gymnastics. There is always something to keep the kids active but importantly, entertained & enjoying themselves. This time it was great to see that some of the children who would often miss out, are able to join their friends at the Summer Camp thanks to funded places.”
Mark Draycott commented, “We really appreciate the opportunity to be able to allow more kids to attend the Summer Camp and the healthy food that we have been provided with has given us plenty of opportunity to ensure all the kids have a decent meal in them before spending a day being active & enjoying time with their friends.”
