North Swindon MP Supports Local Primary Schools Football Competition

North Swindon MP and avid sports fan, Justin Tomlinson attended the finals of the Primary Schools Football Association (PSFA) competition at Millbrook Primary School and presented the winners with trophies.

The local Primary Schools Football Association consists of teams predominantly in the Swindon area and includes schools all over North Swindon. The competition, which included matches in four tournaments (Boys’ Plate Final, Boys’ Shield Final, Girl’s Cup Final and Boy’s Cup Final), culminated in Haydonleigh Primary School beating Westlea Primary School in a penalty shootout.

Justin, who gave awards out to competing players, paid tribute to both teams for a hard-fought game in which both sides represented their schools well.

Both locally and in Parliament, Justin has been a vocal advocate for the importance of sport groups within schools, and has shown that support most recently in supporting the successful Draycott Sports Camp in North Swindon.

Additionally Justin has been pushing in Parliament for funding from the Soft Drinks Levy, or ‘Sugar Tax’, to be directed into school sports programmes, including those that run during the summer & after school, in order to provide parents and children with opportunities to live healthy, active lives. Following Justin's work, Ministers have committed to £415 million of additional spending to build new facilities & improve existing ones to make it easier for a range of extra-curricular activities including sport.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “It was great to come along to see the great passion for football on display by our local schools. Schools in North Swindon have been improving their sporting facilities and this is clearly having a positive effect on the children at those schools. It was also great to see the mix of matches involving both boys and girls, and a huge congratulations to Haydonleigh Primary and all the other schools that took part on the day.”
