Last week Justin Tomlinson MP took part in the ‘Which – safeguard us from Scams’ workshop in the Houses of Parliament. The workshop was designed to highlight some of the dangers that people can face when they use online banking.
Individual losses can cause significant distress and involve life-changing amounts of money; and the potential for consumer harm is increasing as more push payment scams are being perpetrated.
Unlike with many other payment methods, people deceived into transferring money to a fraudster by bank transfer currently have no legal right to get their money back from their bank.
Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and the industry has launched a publicity campaign aimed at consumers to help protect themselves from the pressure that can often be applied by scammers attempting to get money.
In order to understand the issue better, the regulator is asking any victims to write in and share their experiences http://www.which.co.uk/bank-transfers
