Justin Tomlinson MP has visited the Aldi Distribution Centre, based in Swindon on Scimitar Way, which employs hundreds of jobs locally.
Justin went on a full tour of the site, the base for 82 stores across the region, seeing the busy warehouse that acts as the hub for all of the fresh food leaving daily on the hundreds of lorries which pass through the site to deliver to stores.
The site's expansion was also discussed with plans for an extension to the warehouse and a £11.3 million total investment in North Swindon, which will help to create 100 new jobs.
Justin also discussed Aldi’s plans locally with the senior management team, including proposals for the new Highworth store and the new Rodbourne Road store, the latter of which will provide a £5 million investment creating 30 new jobs.
As part of the Government's plans to reduce plastic consumption, Justin asked what Aldi were doing to play their part. Representatives from Aldi explained the company has an ambitious plan to deliver a 50% reduction in plastic packaging by 2025, and plans to scrap all single-use plastic bags.
There was also discussion around the ‘Get Set to Eat Fresh’ campaign, which is Aldi’s contribution to corporate social responsibility through promoting the benefits of healthy eating. Justin discussed the Government’s childhood obesity strategy and how companies can contribute to this by raising awareness of healthy foods.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I really enjoyed my visit to Aldi where we discussed a number of key issues which the Government is focusing on. I was also able to chat about Aldi’s plans locally as well as their continued investment here in Swindon, which is helping to boost our local economy and create further new jobs.”
