North Swindon MP Visits Swindon Academy As Part Of UK Parliament Week

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has visited Swindon Academy's schools at Alton Close and Beech Drive to teach pupils about the work Parliament does.

The visit was part of UK Parliament Week and designed to show the children how a Bill in passed through the Houses of Parliament.

In order to show this, the children were split into two groups to represent the House of Lords and House of Commons, and a Queen & Clerk were also selected.

The Bill went back and forth between Commons and Lords, with both sides disagreeing and the House of Lords enjoying their power to say no. The Bill ‘ping-pongs’ between the Houses as the children try to agree, and usually the Bill passes and is given Royal Assent.

Justin was also able to announce the winners of the School Council elections and wish them luck as they represented their classes.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I always enjoy these events, and try to make them as interesting and interactive as possible. I think it is important that children are politically engaged from an early age, and I hope this might inspire some of them to become MPs.”
