North Swindon MP Visits Walking Netball At The Haydon Centre

Local MP Justin Tomlinson continued his summer of sport as he visited the Haydon Centre to see one of the Walking Netball sessions put on by Mo Squires, Swindon District Netball Association Netball Development Officer, as part of Swindon Borough Council’s Active Life scheme.

There are several session run across North Swindon including at the Highworth Rec, Grange Leisure Centre and Haydon Centre. The number of those taking part who attend the weekly sessions is well into the twenties and can often reach up to thirty people.

There is a huge variety of ages stretching right up to 81 years! The rules of the game have been slightly modified to suit the age group and changes including walking a few steps with the ball and not being allowed to run and jump, however the game is still fast-paced and competitive.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “It was fantastic to see such a popular group activity on offer here in Swindon. Not only does the walking netball provide a very cheap way for those of all ages to stay active, but there is a real social element to it as well as the ladies all go for a coffee and a catch-up after the session. Mo does a really great job here and elsewhere in opening netball up to those of all abilities. She is a real asset to our community.”
