North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson has welcomed the latest statistics published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, that show rough sleeping in the UK has declined by 37% in the last year.
According to the report by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, he number of people sleeping rough has fallen for the third year in a row. Across England, the numbers have fallen by 37% to 2,688, which is the largest decrease since the annual snapshot was introduced. Since the Prime Minister took office in 2019 rough sleeping has fallen by 43%.
The positive progress on rough sleeping numbers, has come in conjunction with the Government announcing £700 million this year to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping. This includes; £150 million for the Rough Sleeping Accommodation Programme, £91.5 million for the Next Steps Accommodation Programme, £112 million for the Rough Sleeping Initiative, and over £20 million on Protect and Protect Plus, targeted towards areas with higher numbers of rough sleepers to help them redouble their efforts to accommodate people and ensure they are registered with a GP.
North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson commented:
"The report published today demonstrates the ongoing success of the 'Everyone In' initiative which, by January, had helped over 11,000 vulnerable individuals rough sleeping off the streets and helped 26,000 people move into longer-term accommodation. Its phenomenal success and should be a source of great pride for all involved."
