North Swindon MP Welcomes New Funding For Maths In Schools

The announcement of a new advanced Maths premium has been welcomed by North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson.

Schools will benefit from £600 for every additional pupil who studies an advanced Maths qualification. The move is to help ensure Britain has the skills for success in the future, and will also support institutions to increase the number of girls and those from disadvantaged backgrounds taking advanced Maths qualifications.

From September 2018, schools and colleges will receive an extra £600 premium for each additional pupil taking the one-year AS Maths or the Core Maths qualification. This could mean £1,200 for each additional pupil who takes the two-year A level in Maths or Further Maths.

The announcement follows the Government’s commitment to deliver world-class education in all areas, which inspires young people to make the most of their lives.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “School standards have already improved, with 1.9 million more children in good or outstanding schools than in 2010, including almost 4,000 in Swindon, and I am delighted that the Government continues to work hard to maintain this upward trend. As well as powering the economy, being good at Maths can give young people a real advantage, with data showing that pupils who do well at Maths earn more over their career. While Maths continues to be the most popular at A Level, there are almost three quarters of students with an A*-C in GCSE Maths who choose not to study it further. I hope that this premium can get more young people continuing with Maths, and reap the benefits that it brings.”
