North Swindon MP Welcomes New Leisure Discount For Carers

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has welcomed the news that carers in Swindon will receive a discount on at Better Leisure Centres.

Justin brought together Swindon Carers Centre and Better Leisure to introduce a 20% discount on Health and Fitness memberships.

There are 21,000 carers in Swindon, including 900 young carers. Swindon Carers Centre works to support around 4,000 carers.

The gym membership will allow them to use the facilities and classes at the Oasis, Link Centre, Haydon Centre, Health Hydro, Dorcan Leisure Centre, Haydon Centre and the Turkish Baths.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “This is a really great initiative. Carers work so hard looking after other people that they don’t take time for themselves. Hopefully, making gym membership less expensive will encourage carers to join the gym and take some time for themselves.”

Gina Richards, a pupil from Dorcan Academy, had joined Justin for the day to gain some work experience. She wrote an article reporting from her visit to the Link Centre and what this means for Swindon Carers:

Swindon North MP, Justin Tomlinson, has helped Swindon Carers Centre achieve a 20% discount at the Link Recreation Centre.

There are 21,000 carers in Swindon, and the Swindon Carers works with 4,000 of them - 900 of which are Young Carers.

The aim of the discount is to enable carers to have a break, socialise and do some exercise This has interested many different types of carer, Young Carers, Young Adult Carers, and Elderly Carers because of the opportunities that this occupies.

Fiona Prinzi - a lead in helping Swindon Carers achieve their goal - explained in more detail about the deal between the Carers Network in Swindon and The Recreation Centre: “A lot of carers do not have enough time to socialise and do certain activities as they have to care for someone full time. This discount will enable them have fun yet allow them to care for and afford more than one ‘pass’ or ‘ticket’, allowing the cared-for person a chance to join in. I am very pleased that Paul Dobbs, Manager of the Link Recreation Centre, has agreed to the 20% discount offer for all Swindon Carers. It will be lovely to see more carers out and about and participating in further activities.”
