North Swindon Welcomes Further Good News On Falling Unemployment



The North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson, has welcomed the news that in May both unemployment and youth unemployment fell in North Swindon, according to the latest data released by the Office of National Statistics.

The number of people out of work in the constituency fell by 94 last month (down 707 over the past twelve months) whilst youth unemployment fell by 30 (down 155 since the same date last year). Overall, unemployment in North Swindon has fallen by 38.8% since the General Election in 2010, whilst youth unemployment has fallen by 37%.

Across the United Kingdom, the number of people in work rose to 30.5 million - meaning 1.69 million people have found work since May 2010, unemployment fell by 161,000 in the last three months and more than 780,000 people found work in the last twelve months. 

Justin Tomlinson MP said: "Once again we have the fantastic news that both unemployment and youth unemployment in North Swindon have fallen. Our long-term economic plan in ensuring that we cut taxes for individuals and help to create the conditions in which businesses can grow, thrive and take on even more North Swindon residents".

  • Claimant count: 1.09 million in May (down 27,400 on April and down 408,800 since May 2010)
  • 1.3 million of the jobs created since the election have been full-time – over three-quarters of the rise in employment.
  • The proportion of women in work hit 67.9 per cent – the highest since records began.
  • Long-term unemployment is down 37,000 over the last three months, and down 108,000 on the year.
  • The number of unemployed young people fell by 59,000 over the last three months, and is down by 91,000 since May 2010
  • The fall in the claimant count is the largest annual fall in sixteen years
