local residents open the new £2m Pine Trees Community Centre
A new community centre in Swindon has opened its doors to the public.
The £2m Pine Trees Community Centre replaces the old one which was demolished in 2007 - now the site of the Swindon Academy on Beech Avenue.
It also includes two dental surgeries, a large events hall, public library, internet cafe and rooms which can be rented for community events.
Swindon Borough Council will support the centre in its first year, but it is hoped it will become self-financing.
The council will own the freehold and it hopes to set up a board of trustees to run the centre.
The centre had been due to open last month but this was delayed following the theft of copper cabling which had damaged part of the roof.
Councillor Russell Holland (Conservative, Stratton St Margaret), cabinet member for communities and housing, said it was hoped the building would be very well used by the community who had had a real say in its design.
"Several years ago the council promised local people that they would have a new community centre in 2011, and I'm very pleased we've been able to keep that promise despite the very tight budget situation," he added.
Justin Tomlinson MP, "I was delighted to play a part in opening this fantastic facility. This will become a real asset for the Pinehurst community who has helped shape and plan the services on offer.
"I am also exceptionally impressed by the new library, which once the centre is fully operational will see a massive increase in opening times compared to the old library - a real boost for local residents. This is a great day for the Pinehurst community!"
