Swindon Advertiser Weekly Article - 10th June

This week is Carer’s Week. A chance to recognise the valuable contribution made by unpaid carers across the UK and to emphasise the importance of supporting them in their crucial roles. Both as the North Swindon MP and Minister for Disabled People, I have been lucky to meet many carers and see first-hand the amazing job that they do looking after some of the most vulnerable in our communities.

Locally I have long been a supporter of Swindon Carers as well as Swindon Young Carers - it’s important to remember that carers can be people of all ages and that often the responsibility of looking after a loved one does fall onto the shoulders of young people. Both local groups do an amazing job of supporting carers and ensuring that their well-being and happiness is also a top priority. I will be joining them again this Saturday for the annual ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ awareness event which starts at Wharf Green at 11am. The event is a great chance to speak to carers as well as raise awareness in solidarity as we walk around the town centre. If you see us, then please do join in to show your appreciation of the valuable work that carers do for our society.

Elsewhere, the EU Referendum is just round the corner and the discussions between both campaigns is heating up. I have been undated with correspondence from local residents who quite rightly want to know a number of facts before they make their decision. This has mainly included queries about accessing enough information from both sides of the debate. As the North Swindon MP I want to make sure that residents are provided with every opportunity to question and learn as much as possible.

That is why I am hosting an EU Referendum drop-in event at my brand new office on Saturday 18 June from 10am till 12pm. I have invited both sides of the campaign, Vote Leave and Britain Stronger In, to each have a stand where they will be able to provide literature and put forward their case. They will also be on hand to answer any questions North Swindon residents may have. People will be able to drop by for as little or as long as they wish to pick up leaflets, raise issues or have a general chat. I will obviously be there as well to speak to residents, as well as make the cups of tea!

So if there are any North Swindon residents who are still undecided, or simply want to raise queries, then please do come along. My new office is: Justin Tomlinson MP, Customer Service Hub, Orbital Shopping Park, Thamesdown Drive SN25 4AN.
