Swindon MPs Secure £30 Million Investment Deliver To Expanded A&E Services At The Great Western Hospital

Swindon MPs Justin Tomlinson & Robert Buckland have welcomed the news the Great Western Hospital is to benefit from almost £30 million of new investment to expand services.

The town’s hospital will receive £29.573 million of new Government funding to deliver a modern Integrated Front Door and Transitional Care Facility, which will provide a reconfigured and rightsized Emergency Department as well as a transitional care facility.  The new facility will ensure that patients can access the very best healthcare in a new, state-of-the-art, and expanded facility.

Both Justin & Robert backed the hospital’s bid for this vital funding; directly lobbying Ministers including the Health Secretary Matt Hancock. The funding is part of an extra £1 billion being announced across England to deliver state of the art local services. It comes on top of the £20.5bn per year extra funding for the NHS over the next five years - the longest and largest funding settlement in the NHS’s history.

The town’s MPs have championed local NHS services; working to secure additional funding for the GWH and local Clinical Commissioning Group, as well working with clinicians to improve the way funding is allocated. They have also worked alongside Swindon Borough Council to improve access to primary care services across the town.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I am delighted that we have secured this important investment in the GWH. Both Robert & I lobbied to deliver this funding and the Government has rightly seen how it will transform both emergency care and transitional care in Swindon. This new £30 million site will ensure the patients can get access to the right treatment, in the right place, at the right time. Crucially, this is announcement builds on the record funding in the NHS we already have under this Conservative government.”

Robert Buckland MP said: “This is great news for Swindon and for GWH. They have worked hard to secure this investment and we have continued to lobby the Health Secretary to make it become a reality.  Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust will now be able to provide a reconfigured and correctly sized Emergency Department and a Transitional Care Facility. The investment is part of the wider plan to provide better services for patients, integrate care better and renew ageing facilitates, which we need here in Swindon. The increased funding and the Long Term Plan demonstrates the Government’s abiding commitment to the NHS so the NHS can be there for all of us, free at the point of use, long into the future.”
