Justin Tomlinson MP Secures Intel Donation For Local Museum

THE Museum of Computing in Swindon has received a £3,500 donation from IT giant Intel. This is the second time the global microprocessor company, which has an office in Pipers Way, Swindon, has donated cash to the museum, after being approached by MP Justin Tomlinson, who has long been a supporter of the museum, in Theatre Square. The money will help with running costs and programmes developed to teach children about the history of computing. Mr Tomlinson, the Swindon North MP, said: “The facili...

Spectator Article On Childhood Obesity

Spectator Article On Childhood Obesity

Whilst I have been a vocal supporter in Parliament of the need to tackle childhood obesity, I am by no means a shining example.  My childhood was fuelled by sugar and E numbers that had me running around convinced that one day I would be a professional cricketer, or the next Gary Lineker, inspired by whatever sport happened to be on the telly.  The year was 1986 and politicians hadn’t given a second thought to Frosties. Listening to Andy Burnham this weekend (over my bowl of Frosties), it occurr...

In 2012, this country spent £207 billion on welfare.  That is £207,000,000,000.  To put this in context, imagine every hospital, every GP surgery, every operation, every appointment and every patient.  Add to this our armed forces, the soldiers, the tanks, the aircraft carriers.  Now imagine every police officer working hard every day to keep our streets safe.  If you add all this together, you are still short of what we spend on welfare.  Imagine every school, university, college and teacher, d...

Justin Tomlinson MP Welcomes Start Up Loan Boost For Swindon

Today the Government has announced a £30 million boost to Start-Up Loans to create thousands of new businesses and help young people find jobs in Swindon.   The Prime Minister’s announcement brings the total pot for Start-Up Loans to more than £110 million over the next three years and will see the age range extended to 30 years old, enabling more people to take advantage of this fund.  The funding comes in conjunction with free business advice from mentors, crucial to those taking their first s...

After America postponed its jump off the fiscal cliff in the early hours of New Year’s Day, world stock markets have soared, with our FTSE index passing the 6000 mark for the first time in 18 months.  This combined with retailers John Lewis and Next both reporting strong Christmas trading figures, set the tone for early New Year economic cheer.  However, America’s debt remains an incomprehensible $16.3 trillion (£10 trillion) and its politicians are failing to reduce it, seemingly only tinkeri...

A New Year Message from Justin Tomlinson MP

A New Year Message from Justin Tomlinson MP

The government’s focus during 2012 has quite rightly been the economy, and it will continue to be the priority in 2013. The economy is healing. A million new jobs have been created in the private sector, the deficit has been slashed by a quarter, and inflation and unemployment have both fallen. Our manufacturing industry is also bouncing back: for the first time in living memory, Britain is now a net exporter of cars. This is in part thanks to the excellent work of employees at the Honda and Min...

2012 has been extremely busy, and the end of the year is a good opportunity to reflect on some of the biggest issues I’ve been campaigning on.   We now have a record 4.2 million self-employed people in the UK, and I am determined to see more young entrepreneurs, tapping into their energy, enthusiasm and understanding of technology.   Young people are inspired by TV programmes such as The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den. I myself studied Business at University, yet I was the only one of 350 student...

Last week’s hotly-contested BBC Sports Personality of the Year award showed just what an amazing year it has been for sport.  Our record Olympic and Paralympic medal haul, sporting triumph in the Champions League Final, the Tour de France, the Ryder Cup and, most recently, the Test series in India...the list is almost endless.  Locally we also celebrated Swindon Town’s promotion, a visit to Wembley and Swindon Robins being crowned the Speedway champions!   Behind such successes in elite sport ...

When Swindon Robins were crowned speedway league champions, it was easy to forget that just five years ago we faced the very real threat of losing the Abbey Stadium altogether. At the time I was a Councillor for the Abbey Meads ward and the Lead Member for Leisure on Swindon Borough Council. Without hesitation, I led the campaign to save the stadium, with public meetings, protests, petitions, and local and national media coverage. The campaign saw a fantastic coming together of speedway fans, lo...

14/12/12 - Justin Delivers Christmas Encouragement At Dorcan Sorting Office

Justin Tomlinson MP has visited Royal Mail’s Dorcan delivery office to pass on best Christmas wishes and encouragement to the postmen and women at their busiest time of year. Mr Tomlinson was shown round the office by local Delivery Office Manager Steve Mitchell and was introduced to all the postmen and women who are working hard doing their bit to sort and deliver all the cards and parcels in Swindon in the run-up to Christmas. Mr Tomlinson said: “It was great to meet the hard-working Royal Mai...
